Debriefing

In which Haft catches up with Megren on the events of the previous night, and in which there is a lot of chatter Haft probably can’t hear from where he’s standing

You stand in the busy outer ward of Castle Anvard, full of people seeing to the needs of king and kingdom. There are market stalls along the outer wall, bustling with merchants and shoppers. Grooms work in the stables, tending to the horses there, and you hear the occasional bark of a dog from the kennels. The sounds of hammer hitting iron rings out from the blacksmith shop. There are stairs leading to the gate towers on the northern and southern corners of the outer curtain. To the east is the outer gatehouse, and the road leading into the realm of Archenland, and to the west another gate, leading to the inner gatehouse, the inner ward, and the main keep of Anvard.

Haft, on the wall walk, having seen Megren exiting the northeast hall not long after sir Dar, goes down to meet her in the Outer Ward.

Megren walks into the ward, heading back to her post near the Outer Gatehouse. She offers Haft a grin when she sees him exit a tower shortly thereafter.

Haft lengthens his stride to catch up with her.  “Hail, Megren.”

Megren asks, “Evening. How’d it go with the Captain last night?”

Haft’s step falters a little at the phrasing, but he just shrugs.  “All right.  Did you manage to catch up to Sir Colin?”

Megren says, “Sure did.”

Haft asks, “Well, what happened?”

Megren grins, “You first.”

Haft frowns.  “Remember how you said you wouldn’t ask me about a story I didn’t want to tell?”

Megren’s face falls, but only for a moment before she moves the conversation back somewhere comfortable for him. “Nothing much. Sir Colin said the same as Captain Garian.”

Haft asks, “What’s that?”

Megren says, “Huh? Um, don’t go in the kennels or near Lanisen.”

Haft looks confused.  “He said that to you?”

Megren says, “…No. To Aaron.”

Haft says, “Oh, you found him then.”

Megren nods. “He had been heading home, from what I could tell.”

Haft glances around.  “Before or after Sir Colin calmed down?”

Megren says, “Uh–”

Haft wavers.  “Sorry.”

Megren says, “I’m sure they’ve got it all sorted by now.”

Haft asks, “Yeah, probably…you on duty here?”

Megren says, “Well, I would have finished, but Lord Dar asked for my report, so I thought I’d spend a little extra out here. Maybe worthwhile ’til we’re sure Aaron’s respecting Captain Garian and Sir Colin anyway.”

Haft says, “Right, well I’ve got to report elsewhere.  I’ll see you in the mess.”

Megren says, “Sure.”

Haft heads off in the direction of the North Stair.

You stand on Anvard’s Inner Wall Walk. From here you have a view of both the Inner and Outer Wards. A cool wind ruffles your clothes. A glance down into the Outer Ward reveals the bustle of people going to and from the market stalls, or off to various duties throughout the castle. In the Inner Ward you see nobles and staff, mingling happily or going about their own business.

Outer Ward> Garian comes walking toward your from the Kennels.

Outer Ward> Garian departs from the Kennels, his pace leisurely.

Outer Ward> Megren stands with her back against the wall near the outer gatehouse. She straightens up when she sees the Captain.

Outer Ward> Garian slows as he approaches Megren and gives her a curious look. “Guardswoman.” He greets her in a polite tone with a nod.

Outer Ward> Megren nods back with a smile. “Evening, Captain.”

Outer Ward> Garian asks, “How goes the watch?”

Outer Ward> Megren says, “Quiet as a rabbit, Captain. Not a Talking one, because I assume those are louder. Although, I don’t actually know, not having ever met one.”

Outer Ward> Garian chuckles softly and smiles, “Well, I imagine they’d be more soft spoken than a Talking Squirrel. Can’t say I’ve met either myself, tho.”

Outer Ward> Megren says more seriously, “Lord Dar did ask for my report on Aaron earlier today, Captain.”

Haft walks down…

Haft strides toward the Megren and the Captain, but waits to be recognized so as not to interrupt.

Garian gives a soft “hm” noise, becoming more serious. He gives a small nod. “Yes. I suppose he would be interested, especially now that there is a noble involved. Was he satisfied with your report?”

Megren’s eyes flicker to the newly arrived Haft before she replies, “He seemed so. I think he’s hoping to collect your report when he can.”

Haft casts his eye around the barrels and baskets near the wall, as though looking for something.

Garian gives a small nod, “I will find him when I can.” He looks about the ward and spots Haft. He calls out, “Guardsman” in greeting and nods.

Haft asks, “Ah, sorry Captain.  Gearn say he’s left his waterskin down here somewhere and I said I’d take a look round for it before joining him on duty.  I don’t suppose you’ve spotted it, Megren?”

Megren gestures with her thumb. “Back in the guardhouse, probably.”

Garian sighs and mutters, “Always forgetting something that one…”

Garian smiles.

Haft nods.  “I’ll check there then.  Thanks.”  He strides into the gatehouse.

Haft hunts around for a bit inside the gatehouse before returning to the Outer Ward.

Megren’s brows rises a little. “Sure, Captain. Anything.”

Garian says, “I’d like you to trade shifts with some of the men so you’ll be in a group helping Guardsman Haft transition. Seeing as you’re on good terms, I thought it might help him feel more comfortable.”

Haft emerges from the gatehouse, apparently unsuccessful, as he resumes hunting around the barrels.

Megren opens her mouth to respond, but lowers her voice when Haft reemerges.

Megren mumbles “Mhm. Happy …”, to Garian.

Garian looks pleased, “Thank you.”

Haft lifts one of the barrels by the wall and pushes it aside, looking behind it.

Megren glances at Haft again, looking uncertain.

Garian turns to see Haft, “No luck?”

Haft grunts, pushing the barrel back.  “Not yet.  He can’t have left it in the barracks, said he only just came from here.”

Megren says, “You can take him mine. It’s on my bed.”

Garian hehs softly, “And mind he doesn’t lose it.”

Haft says, “I will.  Thank you Megren.  Sir.”  He turns and departs toward the North Stair.

Haft returns to the Inner Wall Walk.

Outer Ward> Megren returns her attention to the Captain.

Outer Ward> Megren mumbles “Anything … Captain?”, to Garian.

Outer Ward> OOC> Megren says, “Not really mumbled but since Haft is watching from the wall.”

Outer Ward> Garian shakes his head.

Outer Ward> Megren looks at the kennel door. “May I ask what you and Lanisen discussed?”

Outer Ward> Garian says, “As I did not get the chance to meet with Sir Colin, I wanted to discuss what happened from his perspective last night. And to gather his opinion on Aaron.”

Outer Ward> Megren nods. “Does he seem like he needs to be checked in on, or is best left at his peace?”

Outer Ward> Garian says, “For now I think it is best to let things settle. Lanisen seems well and Aaron has not shown his face. And I prefer he not.”

Outer Ward> Megren nods again. “Of course, Captain.”

Outer Ward> Garian asks, “Where you and Lord Darrin able to find Sir Colin last night?”

Outer Ward> Megren says, “Yes, Captain.”

Outer Ward> Garian asks, “Was Lord Darrin able to… soothe the situation?”

Outer Ward> Megren says, “Uh, he and Sir Colin agreed to debrief sometime today.”

Outer Ward> Garian gives a small nod. “Good.”

Outer Ward> Megren clasps her hands behind her back. “If I may say, Sir?”

Outer Ward> Garian nods.

Outer Ward> Megren says, “Aaron seems most off balance when the response to him is unruffled.”

Outer Ward> Garian quirks an eyebrow. “Oh?”

Outer Ward> Megren says, “I am not sure that the best response to him is anger. Clarity and firmness, yes, however.”

Outer Ward> Garian gives a small nod.

Outer Ward> Megren says, “It may be he is no longer a problem, of course. I hope that is the case.”

Outer Ward> Garian says quietly, “As do I.”

Inner Ward of Anvard> Darrin walks toward you from the Staff Quarters.

Inner Ward of Anvard> Darrin walks northeast into the hallway.

Outer Ward> Megren says, “I apologize if it was not my place to say, Captain.”

Outer Ward> Garian smiles, “I appreciate the input, Guardswoman. I think it is a very keen observation. I know I should have kept my temper last night, but I have a very hard time with a blatant disregard for authority. I do hope this has resolved itself.”

Outer Ward> Garian says, “And I will be sure to use your insight should there be future dealings.”

Outer Ward> Megren says, “Thank you, Captain.”

Inner Ward of Anvard> Colin walks toward you from the Staff Quarters.

Inner Ward of Anvard> Colin walks northeast into the hallway.

Outer Ward> Garian says, “I need to prepare for my patrol. Pleasant eve, Guardswoman.”

Outer Ward> Megren says, “You too, Captain.”
