Contents: A daughter of eve with short, copper hair (Megren).
Megren perches on the edge of the wall, her legs dangling over the road into the outer ward.
Haft walks onto the wall walk. “You’re gonna fall, you keep that up.”
Megren turns so that she’s straddling the wall, and she leans against the parapet behind her. “Bored,” she grins, looking a little weary.
Haft says, “You’re always bored. Watch is dull.”
Megren says, “Nah, I’m not supposed to be watching, even. Only came up here because there’s naught to do, and father’s out on a hunting trip just now.”
Haft asks, “Oh. What do you mean ‘not supposed to be’? You just mean not your shift, or..?”
Megren squints an eye at him regretfully. “Kairyn says I’m to take the next three days off guard if there’s enough of us to spare. Which she told captain Garian, too. And of course, there is.”
Haft asks, “Why’s that, then?”
Megren holds out her arm. “Feel.”
Haft grasps her forearm. “Your skin’s hot. You looked like you’d had a bit too much sun. From the fire?”
Megren nods, closing her eyes and readjusting herself against the parapet. “You’re off, too, then?”
Haft says, “Eh, not ’cause of the fire. Have duty later. I wasn’t near as close as you and the king got.”
Megren gets a big grin at this.
Haft grunts. “What’re you so chipper about, then?”
Megren says in a confidential, giggly voice, “Did you see his beard?”
Haft’s eyebrows rise in surprise. He seems to be trying to decide on an appropriate expression, and settles on a scowl. “T’ain’t funny, that. Think my heart stopped when he pulled that man outta the way.”
Before the Gates of Anvard> Eston comes walking over the steep ridge to the northeast.
Before the Gates of Anvard> Eston walks up the road toward the Gatehouse of Anvard.
Outer Ward> Eston comes walking toward you from the Outer Gatehouse.
Megren says, “/He/ thought it was funny.” She grins anew. “And just when the embassy from Calormen is here.”
Haft’s lips twitch slightly at the latter, though he manages to master the expression. He’s gazing out over the Outer Ward when he notes Eston below. “Forgive me Megren, but we’ll have to talk some other time. There’s someone down there I must see.”
Megren glances at him. “Oh. Sure. See you later.”
Haft waves vaguely, then heads into the tower.
Haft walks down the stairs to the Outer Ward.
-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-= You stand in the busy outer ward of Castle Anvard, full of people seeing to the needs of king and kingdom. There are market stalls along the outer wall, bustling with merchants and shoppers. Grooms work in the stables, tending to the horses there, and you hear the occasional bark of a dog from the kennels. The sounds of hammer hitting iron rings out from the blacksmith shop. There are stairs leading to the gate towers on the northern and southern corners of the outer curtain. To the east is the outer gatehouse, and the road leading into the realm of Archenland, and to the west another gate, leading to the inner gatehouse, the inner ward, and the main keep of Anvard. -=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=

Contents: A son of adam with curly hair (Eston).
Eston walks out from one of the markets, a young child strapped to his back in a make-shift sort of sling. He has some packages under one arm and is walking unaided but with a slight limp.
Haft strides into the Outer Ward, walking immediately toward Eston and calling his name.
Eston waves to Haft with his spare hand and makes his way towards him.
Haft says, “Eston. It’s good to see you and the child are all right. I checked by your house a couple of hours ago.”
Eston nods and waves towards the markets, “Been running errands all day, haven’t had much of a chance to get home”
Haft says, “I had a couple of questions to ask, if you don’t mind. In an official sense.”
Eston nods, “That’s fine, but perhaps somewhere I can have a sit down?”
Haft says, “Of course. The gatehouse will do.”
-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-= You stand in the Outer Gatehouse of Anvard. Its sturdy, iron-bound wooden gates loom to the east. Another pair stands open to the west. Within, you can see the busy Outer Ward, full of people coming and going from Anvard’s open air market.
Across the ward you see the inner gatehouse, Anvard’s second line of defense. To the east you can see the road leading away from the castle. -=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=

Eston comes walking into the Gatehouse.
Eston arrives, following Haft.
Haft gestures to a bench. “Please.”
Eston sets his packages down and unslings the child from his back, taking a seat and sitting her on his lap.
Haft asks, “So. You’re aware that it was Aaron’s home that burned down, yes?”
Eston winces and nods, “How could I not be?”
Haft says, “Right. Well, as you know, I was probably one of the last people to see him before the fire, and I’ve been asked to get a clearer picture regarding certain details. Since he was speaking to you in the hall, I wanted to ask if he said anything about his travel plans.”
Eston stares up at the ceiling as though trying to remember the details of the conversation, “Aye now you mention it he did at that, said he was going to visit his family down in Coghill”
Haft asks, “I see. And did he mention exactly which relations they were, their names, where in Coghill they lived? Or a trade?”
Eston shakes his head, “Sorry, just that he had relatives there and was going to see them”
Haft asks, “Did he indicate how long he planned to be away?”
Eston says, “Long enough so’s that he wouldn’t be needing me to ask around town to help him find a job”
Haft purses his lips. “That’s interesting. May I ask what other subjects you covered?”
Eston adjusts his grip on the child who seems to be trying her level best to escape and says, “Not much, was that point Adeliha arrived with Lecie here and that distracted from the conversation”
Haft asks, “And there was nothing before that, other than him telling you he planned to leave?”
Eston shakes his head, “Not that I recall”
Haft nods. “And, you were still at the inn when the fire began?”
Eston shakes his head, “Was home then but was sent off quickly what with having this little one and not being much help with my injury and all.”
Haft asks, “You didn’t…see or hear anything that would indicate how the fire started, did you?”
Eston shakes his head apologetically, “Sorry, I didn’t”
Haft says, “Right. I guess that’s just about everything then.” He looks like he will turn to go, then pauses a moment to cast his glance over the child, softening. “What’s her name then? I think Lanisen told me, but…””
Eston looks down at the child with a smile before saying, “Lecie, her name’s Lecie”
Haft reaches out a hand, a little hesitantly, looking to Eston for approval.
Haft brushes her cheek with his large, rough finger, then lets her curl her tiny fist about it. He smiles faintly. “Got your hair,” he says.
Lecie holds his finger in that tight grip that infants often have, giving a loud squeal of delight. Eston chuckles, “Well I reckon she likes you”
Haft smiles a bit more. “Very pleased to meet you, Miss Lecie,” he says. He disengages his finger, then straightens, businesslike again. “Well, I have a report to make. IF you will excuse me Eston.”
Eston waves, “Good luck with it all”
Haft nods. “Thanks.” He strides back into the ward.
Haft walks into the Outer Ward.
After this interview Haft inquires as to the whereabouts of Lord Cole and proceeds to the Outer Wall Walk to make his report.

strong build (Colin).
Colin is sitting atop the wall, facing out into the ward with his legs hanging on the outer side.
Cole is standing just behind his brother. “Well, if we simply sit around and wait… I am sure that will be the case. ” he pauses. “What makes you so sure we won’t be able to find him?”
Haft approaches from the north, standing at a respectful distance and waiting to be recognized.
Colin replies listlessly. “Too many places to look.”
Outer Ward> Megren comes walking into the outer ward past the iron gates.
Outer Ward> Megren walks into the Kennels.
Cole frowns a bit, looking as if he wants to argue this when he catches Haft approaching. Turning to him swiftly, he offers the man a quick nod. “Something to report?”
Haft glances quickly at Colin, then approaches and bows. “Lord Cole, Sor Colin.” He addresses Cole. “You asked me to make inquiries with Eston. I have done so.”
Colin turns his head slightly to listen.
Cole’s brow raises expectantly. “And?”
Haft says, “He confirmed that Aaron had spoken to him about leaving for Coghill, just before I encountered them at the inn. The only addition he was able to make, and it is an interesting one, is that Aaron indicated he would be away long enough that Eston should not at this time continue trying to help Aaron find a job in the village. He has been searching for employment there or in the castle for some time.””
Colin snorts quietly and looks back out to the outside of the castle.
Cole glances at his brother before nodding to Haft. “I take it Eston hasn’t seen any sign of Aaron since the fire either then?”
Haft says, “Not in as many words, my lord, but I mentioned that I was one of the last people to see Aaron before the fire and Eston did not indicate that he had seen him since. He did say that he–Eston–had arrived at his home nearby before the fire broke out, but saw and heard nothing that could have suggested a source for the blaze.”
Colin looks down at the dagger in his hands and slowly starts to spin it again.
Cole nods once more, releasing a soft sigh. “I see. ” He examines the stone at his feet. “Anything else?”
Haft’s glance falls to the dagger before returning his eyes to Lord Cole. “No, my lord. Is there aught more I can do for you?”
Colin examines the hilt of the dagger.
Cole doesn’t respond right away. “No… My thanks for looking into the matter further. ” Taking a deep breath, he looks back to his brother. “Anything you should like to add Sir Colin?”
Haft looks to Colin.
Colin lifts his head a little and glances behind him with a dull expression before he shakes his head and faces forward again. “No.”
Haft nods, bows, and strides from the walk.
Cole nods once more, looking back to the Guard and nodding. “You may take your leave then, guardsman. ”
Haft walks north toward the Northern Wall Walk.
