You stand in the Anteroom of the Narrow Gate. Sconces on the walls hold several torches, lending a flickering dim light to the room, a light which makes shadows dance on the grey stone walls and rough stone floor.

A door on the west wall leads out to the Herberg Road. An open arch to the north leads into the Hall, with the sounds of eating and drinking and singing and story-telling. Another arch, to the south, leads to the much quieter Common Room. To the east a staircase leads up to the private rooms.

The Narrow Gate Hall

The Hall of the Narrow Gate is brightly lit by a large chandelier, and by torches on the walls. A bar runs along the length of the south wall. Behind the bar stands Dranken, the Barman, polishing a glass. The wall behind him holds several bottles, and racks of glasses. There is also a menu offering drinks and food. The north wall is dominated by a cheerful stone fireplace.

The rest of the room is filled with tables and stools, in little clusters all over the scuffed wooden floor. An arch leads to the Anteroom to the south.

Deonyc Turns to Eston, “Mind if I sit down?”

Eston says, “If you want.”

Deonyc sits down, “Where’d you travel to, if you don’t mind me asking.”

Eston doesn’t look very comfortable about this at all, “Carmichael, had to help me sister.”

Deonyc pulls some roasted venison from his satchel as well as a small cutting board, and cuts of a slice and putts it on the board.

Eston gives him a very odd look and adjusts his grip on the small child on his lap to prevent potentially dangerous grabbing.

Deonyc looks over, ‘Oh if you two would like some I don’t mind sharing, Id rather have it eaten while its still fresh than keeping it forever.

Eston says, “You’re mad.  She’d choke.”

Haft enters the room, a guarded expression on his face, and begins to head toward an empty corner table.

Eston glances up to see Haft entering, grateful for the distraction he calls out, “Long time no see, Haft.”

Haft turns in surprise at the sound of his name.  His face brightens as he sees the younger man with his daughter.  “Eston!  You’re back.”

Eston grins, “Back and in one piece”. Lecie seems to have become distracted by her now empty juice cup.

Haft walks over and gesture to a seat.  “Mind if I join?”  He nods to acknowledge Deonyc as well.

Eston says, “Go for it.”

Haft sits down and immediately gives Lecie a once-over.  “My, but she’s grown.”

Eston says, “Aye, grown and already causing mischief.”. As if in answer to this question Lecie stares at Haft with wide eyes for a few moments then throws the cup at him. “Lion!” Eston picks up the cup, “I’m sorry about that!”

Haft laughs, clearly unoffended.  ‘She seems in high spirits.”

Eston chuckles, “That’s her alright, least the cup was empty- what with having spilled half of it on herself” Her dress does, on examination seem a little damp.

Haft smiles, then sobers.  “I was worried about you–you and Lecie.  My friend Megren finally got word back from a fellow visiting Carmichael, and said you were all right.”

Eston shifts a little awkwardly, “Had to head to Lancelyn all sudden like to sort out some family matters, then helped me sister get herself sorted what with her husband and all, but is all fine now”

haft asks, “Glad ta hear it.  How’s the leg?”

Eston says, “Not giving me problems anymore, been able to get back to work as well”

Haft looks genuinely glad.  “That’s a blessing.”

Eston nods, “And old Muriel down the way’s agreed to look after Lecie when I’m working so things are looking up now”

haft says, “Who’s Muriel?  Don’t think we’ve met.”

Eston says, “Old widow woman lives not far from me, she was looking after the goat when I was away”

haft says, “Oh that’s right.  I met her when I was inquiring after ya.”

Eston says with a small half-smile, “Aye that’ll be her, don’t like to impose but she insisted…”

Haft calls to Dranken for an order of apple pie.  Dranken stops cleaning his glass and serves it up directly.

Haft says, “Well, I doubt it was an imposition.  I’m sure she was able to use the milk.”

Eston says, “Meant lookin’ after Lecie.”

Haft exclaims, “Oh!  Well, this sweet girl don’t look like much of an imposition either.”

Eston laughs, “Ya say that but you ain’t heard her when she’s in a bad mood, got a set of lungs on her like ya wouldn’t believe”

Haft says, “Well, at least she ain’t a shrinking violet.”

Eston says, “The opposite I’d say”

Haft smiles at Lecie.  “Well I guess I’d better order something before Dranken tosses me out.  I–” He pauses as he sees some movement by the door, where another guard is beckoning to him.  “Bother.  Sorry Eston.  That’s Perth.  Had business in town today and said he’d fetch me if my shift changed.  We’ve had some extra activity in the Outer Ward lately, so I’d best get going.”

Eston waves, “Don’t want to keep ya from important duties. See ya.”

Haft rises and strides from the hall.
