Maire’s brows bunch together, “You look like you haven’t slept.” she touches her arm.

Haft enters the hall, leading Adrian.  The pair head for Cassandra’s room.  Haft takes in the two women with slight curiosity, noting Dalia’s red eyes.

Dalia shakes her head, “I’ve slept.” a small smile tugs at the corners of her lips as Maire puts a hand on her arm. “It…” she glances towards her room.

Maire gently tugs Dalia to the side as Haft and the healer pass. She momentarily meets Haft’s gaze, a little frown crossing her features seeing Adrian. She nods a greeting to Haft, “Good morning, Haft.” To Dalia she says, “But not well, I gather?”

Haft nods back.  “Morning.” He turns to Gearn, who is on duty.  “Adrian wants to see her about her cough.  You can go, and I

‘ll relieve you after.”

Gearn rises from his place sitting outside the door, stretches, and grins his thanks before making his way into the ward.

Haft and Adrian knock and then enter Cassandra’s room.

You stand in a cozy room. A small arched window adorns the curving outer wall. One corner of the space holds a narrow bed with warm woolen blankets. Nearby are a basin and pitcher for cleaning up. A rug covers part of the floor, adding warmth. It looks like a comfortable place for Cassandra to live.

There is a knock upon the door.

There is a gruff voice, “You can come in.”

The door opens.  Haft enters the room, surveying it quickly and then stepping aside for Adrian to enter.  “The healer wanted to see you,” he says.

Cassandra is standing at the window, her kitten on her shoulder. She turns to face the men, her face blank and emotionless. She drops a slight curtsy but it is out of habit than care.

Haft looks taken aback by her appearance.  His eyes flick between her hair and the cat.

The healer crosses the room, setting his bag on her desk. “If you may please take a seat, Miss Cassandra.”

Cassandra does what she is told, the kitten mewing a bit as she shifts. The girl places a hand to keep the kitten on her shoulder. She eyes the open door.

Haft notes the look and moves to close the door behind them.

Adrian walks over to her, “And how are you feeling, Miss Cassandra?”

Cassandra removes the kitten from her shoulder and lets him romp around on the bed. “I am fine, Mister.” She coughs a bit.

Haft watches intently.

The healer peers into her eyes, checking for fever, “Any headaches? Runny nose?”

Cassandra shakes her head, “Nothing, sir.” Toby makes his way to the guardsman, winding his way through the man’s legs.

Haft glances down at the cat with an amused smile before returning his gaze to Adrian and Cassandra.

The healer asks the woman to breath in and breath out. As she does, a racking cough over takes her.

Haft frowns slightly at the cough.

Adrian frowns, mumbling to himself. “I hear that you have not been eating that much.”

Cassandra stares at the floor, “Ain’t hungry.” Toby begins to purr as he continues to rub agasint Haft.

Haft nudges it with his boot, though it’s hard to tell whether he’s trying to get it to leave him alone or actually stroking it in return.

Adrian quietly admonished, “Eating will help you get stronger.”

Cassandra doesn’t look at him. Toby pounces on the boot, beginning to bite it.

Haft snorts at the kitten good-naturedly.

Rifling around in his bag, Adrian pulls out a brown liquid, “This should help with the cough.” He sets it down on the table, “I trust that you will let me know if it gets worse?”

Cassandra’s eyes flick to Toby to make sure he is alright before answering, “Yes, sir.”

Haft speaks up.  “How often ought she to take it?”

Adrian turns to face both of them, “Every morning, with breakfast for at least a week.”

Toby gets tired of the boot and runs towards the bed, leaping up into Cass’ lap. The girl begins to pet him.

“A loyal companion,” Haft observes.  “From the stables, I take it? Meg’s taken another one and let it infiltrate the barracks.”

Adrian packs his bags, “I will take my leave.” He nods to both girl and man before slipping out.

Cassandra glances up at Haft, her face blank. “Lanisen gave him to me.”

Haft nods. “A well-placed gift, it would seem.”  He straightens.  “Gearn has gone to take his rest, so I’ll be in the hall this morning and til noon.  Breakfast should be sent up presently.” He considers something, and holds up a finger.  “One moment.”  He turns and steps into the hall.

Haft heads out to the Staff Quarters corridor.

Adrian leaves Cassandra’s room and heads into the ward.  A moment later, Haft enters the hall, looking toward the women.  “Maire?”

Maire continues, “You don’t need to avoid or hide from anything. Alright? You should not be embarassed. I can speak from personal experience. Do you think it easy for me to face you all, after being arrested for over a month? I am learning to move forward, and I know you can too. It does no one, especially yourself, any good to hide.” she turns when she hears the door to Cassandra’s room open, when her name is called she looks to the source of the voice. “Yes?”

Haft says, “It’s nearly time for breakfast.  Would you prevail upon Brosie to add honey and brown sugar to some of the oatmeal and send that up rather than the brown bread and butter?”  He hesitates, then amends, “for two.”

Dalia shakes her head, “No…I’m sure it wasn’t. But I didn’t believe you were guilty either.” She turns as the door opens glancing up, but seeing Haft drops her gaze.

Maire touches Dalia’s arm in encouragement, and to Haft she says, “Of course.” she nods to them both, “I will be right back.”

After a few minutes Maire returns, carrying a tray with the items Haft requested.

Dalia nods to Maire, and then in Greeting to Haft. “Alright.” She looks to Haft after Maire has gone, and timidly asks , “How is she?”

Haft replies, “She has a cold.  Her brother got her a kitten from the stable and it seems to be keeping her good company.”

Maire makes her way down the hall with the tray, she approaches Haft at the door, “Breakfast, as requested.” she says. On the tray there is a little sprig of lavender along with the other items that Haft requested.

Haft takes the tray.  “Thank you.”  He turns and reenters Cassandra’s room.

Haft heads into Cassandra’s quarters.

Cassandra is still sitting in her bed, petting Toby. The kitten has since shifted and is trying to bite her hand.

Several minutes later, Haft returns, carrying a tray with two bowls of oatmeal.  “This will be better for an irritated throat than bread,” he explains.  “My mother used to make it with honey and brown sugar, so I asked for that.”  He offers her one of the bowls.

Cassandra eyes him warily not taking the bowl.

Haft raises his brows.  “Would you like me to sample some of each?”

Cassandra looks briefly surprised that he would be offered though she quickly schools her features. “Why do you care?”

Haft replies, “I was ordered to stand guard, not to make your confinement unpleasant.  Obviously if you are here and not in the dungeon it’s because Sir Colin has decided your situation warrants it, though I’m not privy to all the details.  Besides,” he adds, “I have a younger sister.”

Cassandra still remains sitting, just petting Toby.

Haft sets down the tray, then takes up the spoon and takes a large mouthful from one of the bowls before turning to the other and starting on it.  “I should go into the hall.  You have milk for the kitten?”

Cassandra nods, “I do.”

Haft says, “All right.  I’ll be just outside if there’s anything you need.  Eat the oatmeal.  It’ll help the throat.” He turns and opens the door.”

Cassandra’s eye watch him leave.

Haft heads outside and closes the door behind him.

Dalia says, “I was deeply hurt by Renand’s words. I’ll try to think on what you said.” She move towards her room.”

Haft emerges from Cassandra’s room carrying a bowl of oatmeal.  He takes his place on the chair outside the door and proceeds to eat.

Maire nods, “I know. It was unkind of him.” she pauses and steps aside to let her pass. “I will see you later, get some rest, ok?”

Dalia nods. “I will. Thank you Maire.”

Dalia says, “and it is late her”

Haft continues to eat.

Maire nods as Dalia leaves, and rubs her brow. She turns spotting Haft once more, she comes closer. “This is a change of scenery for you…from the wall?”

Haft looks up.  “I do have duty elsewhere, you know.  The gatehouse, the towers.  Roaming patrols on the grounds.  Even dungeon duty of late.

Maire’s lips twist to the side, “I know, I was merely teasing.” she offers a little smile, then looks to the door. “How is she?”

Haft says, “She has a cough and a kitten.  Beyond that, I’m really not at liberty to say.”

Maire nods, and pulls her shawl tighter around her shoulders to ward off the chill in the morning air. She is quiet a moment. “A kitten?”

Haft says, “From a litter in the stables.  Squire Megren has one as well.”

Maire smiles, “Might be good for her. Being alone with only your thoughts…can be maddening.”

Haft stops with his spoon halfway to his mouth.  “I feel like we’ve had this conversation before.”

Maire quirks a brow, “Have we?” she shrugs.

Haft makes a face, thinking.  “Seems like it…like I told someone that time alone could be useful or troublesome.”

Maire’s lips tug toward a smile, “Indeed, you did. And quite wise words.”

Haft sighs. “Wonder if anyone ever listens to ’em?”

Maire tips her head, “Perhaps more than you realize.”

“Perhaps,” Haft answers, setting aside his empty bowl on the floor.

Maire rubs her knee, “Has Lanisen been to see her?”

Haft looks at her pointedly.  “You are prying,” he says bluntly.

Maire frowns, and then sighs, she rubs her forehead, but she says nothing.

Haft says, “If you must know the particulars of the situation–and I rather advise against it at this point–you should ask Lanisen himself.  Or Sir Colin, if you have the nerve.”

Maire lifts her chin, “And why do you advise against it?”

Haft says, “Cassandra just framed you for poisoning.  You are now expressing interest in her situation.  Someone might be curious to know if you were out for revenge.  In truth you’re lucky I was willing even to let you bring the oatmeal.”

Maire’s face relaxes, “I’m doing it again.” she says quietly. She shifts her weight, easing off her sore knee, “Yet, I do care about her, and am concerned. I have spoken already to Sir Colin, however.”

Haft asks, “And..?”

Maire quirks a smile, “Now who’s prying?” her tone almost teasing, “He will allow me to see her, as long as he is present.”

Haft shrugs.  “Guard.  I pry professionally.” He offers a wry smile.

Maire ahs, “Is that what they call it? Hm, maybe I should become a guard then…” she returns his smile, with a more easy one of her own.

Haft answers very seriously. “I rather think that ship has sailed.”

Maire shrugs, “Quite so.” she takes a step back.

Haft reaches down and picks up his bowl, holding it out to her.  “If you would.”

Maire takes the bowl, a little frown on her face, then she smiles. “Of course.” with a little nod, she says, “I’ll leave you to your post.” she looks once more to the door.

Haft says, “Have a pleasant day.”

Maire nods and heads to the kitchens, without looking back.
