You stand in the barracks belonging to the Army of Archenland. Here is where

the men reside when not on campaign. There are many bunks along the walls

and at the foot of each bunk is a foot locker. The barracks is neat and

tidy. Arrow slot windows facing out allow for defense and provide light.

Haft sits on his bunk, honing his sword. The whetstone makes a soft swishing noise as it travels the edge of the blade.

Deonyc lumbers into the room with a strong burlap sack that he can barely look over he has a full knapsack on his back, he goes to one of the cots near the middle of the room and drops his stuff next to an open, empty trunk.

Haft looks up at the noise in the otherwise empty room. “The captain said yes then.”

Deonyc nods his back still turned towards haft, “Yeah I got my yes yesterday.”

Haft eyes the sack. “You a collector?”

Haft frowns doubtfully. “Was a fellow here when I was younger who had to keep everything. Every page he ever drew on, pressed leaves, every rock and she’ll he found at the beach, pieces of string. Near drove Da mad.

Deonyc looks suprised, “Everything?” He starts to unpack the bag first his bow, quiver, and a bundle of arrows, a heavy cloak, a rolled up blanket, a few other things.

Haft says, “Pretty much. Always thought he might need it someday, or had some sentimental reason for keeping it.”

Deonyc shrugs, “Well I’ll sure need this stuff, at least ill have to keep it in shape.”

Once all his stuff is on the floor he starts neatly packing his trunk, the bigger items at first.

Haft says, “Well, as long as you don’t clutter things up. It’s tight in here.”

Deonyc nods, “I don’t intend to.” He packs his trunk full with a bit of room to spare and sits down on top of it,

Haft asks, “When’s your first shift?”

Deonyc says, “I’m supposed to take the shift leading up to dusk, so an hour before sundown i end.”

Haft nods. “That’s Perth’s watch. He’s a good man to start out with.”

Deonyc says, “Garian says I’ll be assigned to that shift for a while, and maybe some of the morning shifts, none of the night dawn or dusk shifts for now though.”

Haft chuckles. “Enjoy that luxury while it lasts.”

Deonyc nods and smiles, “Ill try, honestly im in a way looking forward to them.”

Haft says, “Knew you were delusional.”

Deonyc tilts his head, “I suppose it is delusional to enjoy the sun sets as a guard.”

Haft says, “I was thinking more of the midnight watch, though that’s not without it’s rewards.”

Deonyc says, “I suppose, it does take quite some self control to do the night shifts well though.”

Deonyc looks around the room, “So any rules or mannerisms that I should be aware of?”

Haft frowns. “Don’t argue with Magda.”

Deonyc nods, “Ok”

Haft says, “Get yourself a woolen scarf to bind your eyes when you’re starting out day sleeping.”

Deonyc nods, “Preparing for a night shift?”

Haft says, “Yeah. You’re more reliant on the light to tell your body when to wake than you think you are.”

Deonyc nods and chuckles “Alright, who snores the most?”

Haft raises a brow. “Does it matter?”

Deonyc says, “Nope, not really”

Haft says, “Good, cause a solid third of us do. It’ll drive you mad, but if you survive you’ll get used to it.”

Deonyc nods, “I think I will survive, anything else really?”

Haft sets aside his sword and turns to really face Deonyc, fixing him with a serious stare. “Don’t slack or let up on your practice sessions. A guardsman holds lives in his hands and there’s no excuse for a lack of preparation.

Deonyc nods, his expression serious as well

Haft says, “That’s mostly it then. There’s lots of little pieces of advice I could give you: Don’t annoy the woman who does the wash. Be aware of your feet so you don’t step on Tiny–that’s Megren’s cat. Don’t make a ruckus in here. That’s what the mess is for. But you’ll figure all that out on your own. The main thing I care about is that you step up and work as hard as you can to defend the people who are counting on you. Frankly I doubt you’re up to it.”

Deonyc sighs, and nods, “Well thank you for the Heads up, and I think your wrong, time will tell, and I have no false impression my combat doesn’t need work.”

Haft lifts a shoulder. “Prove me wrong and I’ll be glad to have you. Goodness knows if the guard could put up with me, I can put up with you.”

Deonyc nods, “My strenght is archery either way, and I thought the castle could always use good archers, especially after the battle.”

Haft says, “That’s true enough.”

Deonyc says, “Then again when its on the wall, I need to know how to use the sword”

Haft presses his lips together. “We ever get to the point that there’s enemies on the wall, then yer archery has failed.

Deonyc says, “Yes, and then i might redeem myself with my sword.”

Haft grunts and goes back to sharpening his sword.

Deonyc shrugs, “And that’s all i can bring to the guard in combat anyway.”

Haft says, “So you know what you don’t know. Learn it.”

Megren walks through a narrow door leading to the stairwell in the north tower.

Deonyc nods, “It’s good to have a goal, and I have mine.”

Haft nods and falls silent, attending to his sword.
