15th_century_manuscript_of_capricornYou stand inside a circle of cottages, mostly in good repair, with thatched
roofs and solid looking, white-washed walls.  Each one has a tidy path leading
to the front door, and a small garden at the rear. In the center of the circle
is a firepit, used by all in the community.  In this settlement live many of
the citizens of Andale, serving the needs of King and Castle.

A path to the southeast leads out to Andale, and is well traveled by those on
their way to and from the well, or the castle, or the shops.

Haft raps on Eston’s the door.

A muffled voice from within the cottage calls out, “Just a moment”. A short while later, the door is opened by Eston.”

Haft stands at the door holding the lead of a small, speckled goat.  “Greetings,” he says to Eston.

Eston pages, “Eston’s eyes fall on the goat and he blinks with surprise, “Hey Haft, the goat?”

This is a small, cheaply made one room hovel at the very edge of the
settlement. The majority of the walls are bare, white plaster, though there are
some small glassless windows covered by wooden shutters to keep out the cold
and the wet. The floors are covered in a thick rush mat, which is the only
thing covering the compact dirt that would otherwise make up the floor of this
hut. There is a hearth set within the middle of the room and there is very
little in the way of furniture but that which exists is very basic, comprising
only of the bare necessities.

Haft ties the lead to a post and steps inside.  “I was asked to deliver it.  For your service.  Milk and cheese for you and Lecie.”

Eston steps aside as Haft enters, his eyes wide, “Blimey…I uh, well I uh.”

Haft clasps his hands behind his back.  “You can sell the extra cheese, if you need to.  And Captain Garian says he’s got some small tasks you might be able to do to earn a little coin until you’re mended.”

Eston shifts uncomfortably, “Didn’t have to I mean…I’m managing…”

Haft says, “The goat ain’t from me,” he says gruffly.  He glances around the spare cottage.  “And don’t tell me you’re managing,” he adds quietly.  “Tell me what you need and it’ll be arranged for.  Blankets?  Is the babe taking solid food yet?””

Eston fidgets with the hem of his sleeve, “She’s not yet…”

Haft says, “Right.”He looks her over.  “She been sick?”

Eston shifts his weight from one foot to the other, “A while ago.”

Haft frowns.  “But not now?”

Eston says, “Recovering, should be fine so the healer says…”

Haft nods.  “Good.  I’m glad you saw the healer about it.  So, what about food?  Blankets?”

Eston nods slowly, “Aye, I got that don’t worry.”

Haft looks skeptical.  “You’re sure.”

Eston nods again, “Bought some blankets a few days ago.”

Haft asks, “And food?”

Eston nods slowly again, “Got food.”

Haft says, “Right.  Well I’ll be checking back with you, if you need anything.  Remember what I said about the captain’s offer.  And if you need any work done round the place that you can’t manage, I’m your man.”

Eston still doesn’t quite catch Haft’s eyes, “What kind of tasks?”

Haft says, “If something needs mending.  Like a hole in the thatch or a broken shutter.  I can handle a hammer at need.”

Eston asks, “I meant that the captain would have me do?”

Haft says, “Oh.  I’m not certain.  I’ll ask him for you, or you can make your own inquiry at the castle, if it doesn’t trouble your leg too much.  Tell them at the gatehouse that Captain Garian wanted to see you.”

Eston says, “I’ll ask him.”

Haft says, “Good.  I’ll tell him to expect you.  Well, I should be getting back.  Good day to you.  Good day, Miss Lecie.”

Eston gives him a wave and says with forced joviality, “Good day Haft! And uh…Thanks for, well everything.”

“Thank you for your service,” Haft repeats before slipping out the door.
